Danielle Marques Simões

Civil engineer and M.S. student at the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA), Brazil, working on low-carbon binders for infrastructure.

I develop geopolymer cements that set by just adding water, and I study how the activator chemistry and the calcination of the clay shape their microstructure and strength.

  1. KaoliniteOrdered clay layers, Al2Si2O5(OH)4
  2. MetakaolinCalcined: OH leaves as water, layers disorder
  3. GeopolymerActivated: an amorphous Si–O–Al network
Schematic, not to scale. Calcination turns an ordered clay into a reactive, disordered solid; an alkaline activator then rebuilds it as a geopolymer binder. My thesis studies how the calcination temperature shapes that final microstructure.

About

I am an M.S. student at ITA, advised by Prof. João Cláudio Bassan de Moraes, with a CAPES research scholarship. My thesis studies how the calcination temperature changes the microstructure of a one-part geopolymer produced in the laboratory, and the work is the basis of a patent application in progress.

Before returning to research, I spent several years in industry: construction supervision and concrete quality control of the precast lining rings for the TBM tunnels of the São Paulo Metro Line 2-Green expansion, renewable energy project management at Raízen, and aggregate production at Votorantim Cimentos.

I am a member of IBRACON's Technical Committee on Concrete Sustainability and an associate member of ACI Committee 130. I am applying to Ph.D. programs for Fall 2027, with interests in alkali-activated materials and the chemistry of low-carbon cements.

59 MPacompressive strength at 28 days, one-part binder

One-part geopolymers from calcined clay

M.S. thesis, ITA. Defense expected March 2027. Patent application in progress.

A dry geopolymer binder made from calcined kaolinitic clay and solid activators, which avoids the corrosive alkaline solutions that conventional two-part geopolymers require. The thesis examines how the calcination temperature changes the microstructure of the binder. A manuscript for Cement and Concrete Composites will be submitted after the patent filing.

The role of calcium in potassium-based metakaolin geopolymers

With G. Zucarelli and J. C. B. Moraes. 3rd International Congress Women in STEAM, 2026. Accepted.

A comparison of compressive strength between metakaolin geopolymers activated by KOH and by K2CO3 combined with Ca(OH)2, to understand what calcium adds to a potassium system.

Earlier work: bio-based materials

IFSP and IPT, 2016 to 2020. PIBIC/CNPq fellowship.

Macroscopic characterization of 200 wood samples for construction use and the creation of the IFSP Xylotheque, followed by a comparison of steel-reinforced and bamboo-reinforced concrete for bioconstruction.
